In October 2007, San Diego was ravaged by catastrophic wildfires. Fierce Santa Ana winds whipped firestorms through entire neighborhoods, destroying nearly 1,600 homes, killing 10 people and injuring more than 120.  More than 500,000 were evacuated from the South Bay to the Coastal area; many have yet to re-build and re-establish their household.
